Response to Katrina far from complete
On Aug. 19, people in Pass Christian, Miss., along the tide-battered northern Gulf Coast, spoke of the anniversary that has been on their minds in recent weeks, marking the year that has passed since Hurricane Katrina struck the region last Aug. 29. But many in Pass Christian — where Mennonite Disaster Service recently dedicated three new homes it helped build for families who lost everything in Katrina — also were thinking of another anniversary 37 years before. On that date — Aug. 17, 1969 — Pass Christian was destroyed by Hurricane Camille, the storm with 240 mph winds that locals said could never be surpassed.
