A peace chief’s journey of faith
There is no story in North America more epic, or more misrepresented by the dominant white culture, than the Native American story. Occasionally, however, someone gets it right, probably because they make room for both Native and white viewpoints, and their authentic voices, to have a fair hearing. And Raylene Hinz-Penner gets it right in her new book about Southern Cheyenne peace chief and Mennonite pastor Lawrence Hart.
This is because Searching for Sacred Ground: The Journey of Chief Lawrence Hart, Mennonite (Cascadia Publishing House, 2007) does not pretend to be a scholarly, authoritative account of Hart’s impressive, perhaps unprecedented, amalgam of a life, embracing both traditional Cheyenne culture and Christianity. Instead, it is an open, unembarrassed account of the author’s encounter with Hart and her own very personal journey to understanding his rare and evocative story.
