Anniversaries: war and a peacemaker
In four years of war in Iraq, the deaths of American troops and Iraqi civilians have continued to climb, and no effective strategy for restoring peace has taken shape. Meanwhile, thousands of American families — as well as the families of Iraqis killed in the war — have added new anniversaries to each year’s calendar, the dates on which their fathers, wives, children or other loved ones fell victim to the machinery of violence.
