Neglected concern
By Helen Jantz North Newton, Kan.If 40 percent of all babies are born to single mothers, isn’t it about time we show concern for heterosexual issues?
Jesus speaks rather clearly about “hurting one of these little ones” as well as adultery. How many “little ones” are hurting every day because they are not growing up with a loving mom and dad? Premarital and extramarital affairs have led to many abortions — also usually a heterosexual issue. Are we concerned about these really critical heterosexual matters?

You bring up a wonderful yet concerning point, Helen. With so much focus and debate on the homosexual issue in the Mennonite Church, we often forget the sin that is prevalent among heterosexuals. I feel that the Mennonite Church falling too far into the grip of contemporary culture. I find it interesting to dialogue with older adults on issues about divorce over the past fifty years as well as the emergence of more and more pre-marital intimate relationships in recent times. I feel as though the Mennonite Church is becoming too lax on church discipline and right-living teaching. It seems as tough we are beginning to call blatant sin "poor lifestyle decisions". I feel as though a reformation in the Mennonite Church is soon due. It seems that our church is no longer much different from other more liberal denominations. It is saddening and creates much concern in my heart.

The church as Michael Horton has said, in its effort to be relevant to the world culture is dangerously becoming non-relevant.
