Singing the journey

Oak Grove Mennonite Church, Smithville, Ohio

The hymnal supplement Sing the Journey has sparked new energy as we enjoy these wonderful books. A dedication initially introduced the books, purchased with funds given in memory or honor of others.

The annual outdoor service provided opportunity to reflect on the “great cloud of witnesses.” We began with breakfast and conversations about people who significantly influenced our lives. A procession through the cemetery led by trumpet and singing reminded us of good friends and family who have joined “the cloud of witnesses.”

A recent piano concert in support of another cause provided skilled piano playing by George Bixler, grandfather of Maggie, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 8 months old. She underwent treatment for a year and will continue that for some time. The concert, held at Oak Grove, raised $5,600 for children’s leukemia research. The funds will be channeled through Lydia’s Hope, a local fund set up after the death of a 5-year-old who also struggled with this disease.

On Sept. 26, 1959, a young Dutch family from Holland arrived in America, making Wayne County and Oak Grove their home. On the last Sunday in September, the Hubert and Johanna Beun family provided a lovely floral bouquet for the sanctuary in commemoration of 50 years in America. While Hubert has died, Johanna is still an active member of Oak Grove.

Weddings: Justin Hochstetler and Abri Houser, Aug. 1; Matt Hochstetler and Megan Nussbaum, Sept. 12.

Margery Ramseyer, 91, died Aug. 17. Survivors: children Roger Ramseyer, Elaine Blosser, Janet Birky, Beth Stutzman and Sue Buchwalter; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. — Sherry Miller

  • How would be contact what we think was called the Weavertown Youth Choir or something similar to that? When we were on the staff at the Pillar of Fire Church's Zarephath Bible Seminary and Christian School, an accapella choir came from an Amish Mennonite Church in Weavertown or near Ronks, PA, on two occasions to sing in our chapel at Zarephath, NJ. We would like to have them come to do a similar service here in Hightstown,NJ, but do not know how to reach them. Thank you for appropriate information.
