Special MYF
Zion Mennonite Church, Pryor, Okla.
By Eleanor VothThe MYF is a special and appreciated group of teenagers in our congregation.
It is a joy to worship with them and to see them express their faith as they serve as ushers, members of the praise and worship team, pianists and teachers. This summer they carried out a “Local Missions Project.” They camped out Aug. 3-4 at the Family Life Center, and from there they went out to do work projects like washing windows, yard work and building repairs for widows and elderly members of the congregation and community who needed assistance. They were a blessing and were blessed in return.
Conservative Mennonite Conference was held at Iowa Mennonite School near Kalona on July 23-26. About 12 adults and four youth from Zion attended and brought back encouraging and challenging reports. Jake Detweiler brought our Sunday message in our pastor’s absence on July 26.
On Aug. 23 we enjoyed a program by the Sunday school class taught by Jake and Ruth Detweiler. In addition to skits, plus praise and worship singing, they shared with us a German hymn O Gott Vater, Wir Loben Dich written by Leenaert Clock more than 400 years ago. This hymn was published in the Ausbund, the first Anabaptist hymnbook. It is the oldest hymnbook still in use by any Christian group in the world and is now used exclusively by the Amish. It is the second song sung at every Amish worship service. We were given song sheets with both German and English translations to better understand this hymn of praise and dedication.
Wedding: Emily Miller and Floyd Hammond, July 18.
