Anniversary celebration
Akron (Pa.) Mennonite Church
By Janet WeberOn Sept. 26-27, AMC celebrated its 50th anniversary.
We began the weekend with a catered picnic, and about 225 people enjoyed the excellent food and great fellowship. Saturday evening after the meal we enjoyed a fun-music program with a variety of ages and groups participating, and we ended the evening with an ice cream social. Sunday morning we heard from Nancy Heisey, who connected very well to the congregation with her message “Calling All Backyard Fruit Bearers” from Col. 1:1-12. Again we had lots of music during the morning worship and reconnected with past members and friends during our fellowship coffee and tea time.
Earlier this summer we were able to begin reading Pilgrims on a Journey by Gerald Kaufman. Kaufman wrote an AMC 50-year social history. Accompanying the book is a DVD produced by Robert Wyble, which interviews the charter members, past council chairs and our two pastors. It is an excellent addition to the book.
We had several members attend Mennonite World Conference, and they reported to the congregation on Aug. 9. Brian Weaver served with Mennonite Disaster Service in Alaska and reported to the congregation about the project. We commissioned Andres, Amy, Beatrice and Abigail Zorrilla for a term of service with MCC to Honduras.
We accepted Barbara Mitchell with reaffirmation of membership on Sept. 20. — Janet Weber
