Going green
Rainbow Mennonite Church, Kansas City, Kan.
By Pat BertscheOur annual church retreat was held Sept. 12-13 at Youthfront Camp West in Edgerton.
The theme of the retreat this year was “Going Green.” The breakout sessions followed that theme with topics such as “Rain Barrels,” “Five Green Things” for KC, “Healthy Yards” and “Edible Landscaping.”
Child dedication for Marcus McAtee was held during worship service on Sept. 20. His parents are Todd McAtee and Heidi Braun.
New small groups were started in September at Rainbow. Groups are reorganized every two years. A kickoff lunch for the new groups was held after church on Sept. 20.
The Mennonite Volunteer Service house has several new residents. They are Tina Histand of Goshen, Ind.; Emily Yelencich, Seattle, Wash.; Leslie Hammer, Livermore, Calif.; Monica Jeffery, Portland, Ore.; and Jordan Penner, Reedley, Calif. They held an open house on Sept. 27 after church.
Our guest speaker on Oct. 11 was Pastor Jane Heide, co-director and Faith Community liaison for the Rosedale Healthy Kids Initiative and pastor of Rosedale Congregational Church. Heidi Holliday, the Healthy Kids Initiative community organizer, also spoke.
Rainbow church had 21 people participate in CROP Walk 2009 on Oct. 11 and raised $1,810. This support helps to alleviate hunger and poverty in Kansas City and around the world.
Birth: Addison Susanne Zerger, Sept. 4, to Jon and Heather Zerger.
