Exploited facts
By Harry Neufeld North Newton, Kan.My life experience urges me to respond to John Esau’s insightful column, “Opinions First, Facts Second” with these points:
1) Feelings come first, opinions second and facts a distant third.
2) How important is it really to know the facts-truth as long as those with whom we associate have the same opinions and feelings about an issue?
3) It is risky to search for truth, to dare to be a Daniel. We may stand alone.
4) Truth-facts are a commodity to be exploited, skillfully manipulated or ignored as our comfort dictates. Without facts, those who repeatedly shout the loudest in an energetic emotional appeal win the day.
5) We may smile at the incongruity of “Don’t bother me with the facts; I’ve already made up my mind,” yet judgments are often based on the illusion of feeling and opinion rather than on the reality of facts-truth. Sadly, these judgments can have a dramatic effect on people’s lives.
6) But, truthful decision-making gets even tougher. In order to know the truth of a situation, we must know not only the facts but also the context in which the facts are given. The media and courts of law are experts at taking snippets to titillate juries or use in headlines without bothering with the context that may shed a totally different light.
7) It is puzzling that we well- intentioned people settle for less than the truth.

Harry, thank you very much for your letter titled Expoited Facts. It is obvious much thought has gone into this letter.
Many problems in life could be avoided if people would follow the seven points you presented. Satan easily injects deception when we substitute emotions and feelings for truth. It is also a reminder to employ common sense in the process of searching for truth. I am thankful for the common sense I learned early in life. I relied on it frequently in my career.
