Labor and fellowship

Zion Mennonite Church, Pryor, Okla.

By Eleanor Voth

David wrote in Psalm 145:3 — “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.”

Our thoughts were turned to God’s greatness and goodness as we observed the beautiful fall foliage around us, and as we listened to messages from the DVD series “The God of Wonders” in the Sunday evening services.

We spent Sept. 7-8 working together to prepare several hundred jars of apple butter for the Oklahoma MCC Relief Sale. It was a joyous time of labor and fellowship for the participants, who ranged from 10 to 91 years of age.

On Sept. 23, Ginger Brown ministered to the children (adults too) with her puppet friends, who spoke the truths of the Bible in ways easily and clearly understood.

We hosted a banquet for the Gospel Echoes Prison Ministry on Oct. 8. It was a stormy, blustery evening, but 194 guests were able to attend and enjoy the singing by the team as well as the moving testimony by one who had been incarcerated but now is freed and ministering to the spiritual needs of those still in prison.

On Oct. 16, the church participated in a benefit supper and auction to assist Joey and Gina Plank with upcoming medical expenses.

Steve Swartz, Conservative Mennonite Conference minister, brought the message Oct. 18 in the absence of Pastor Duey Matthews, who was holding revival meetings in Ohio. At his request, Swartz also got a bit of hands-on experience in the MCC noodle-making project that was carried out Oct. 19-20. This year all of the rollers and cutters used in the process had been converted from hand-cranked to electrically powered units, which allowed the work to be done more quickly and with fewer sore arms.

Phil Stutzman, evangelist from Ohio, ministered to us in revival meetings Oct. 25-Nov. 1. Special sessions included a men’s prayer breakfast and a youth fellowship meeting.
