From seniors to babies

Science Ridge Mennonite Church, Sterling, Ill.

By Mary Helen Wade

Our church library has been a source of good reading during the cold winter weather. Among several enjoyed books were Carol of Christmas by Marcia Kauffman Clark and Sunset by Karen Kingsbury.

A Christmas tree in the narthex held tags naming gifts that could be purchased for senior citizens. The tags were to be replaced by the named gift. The local Senior Center appreciated our help to make more gifts available for those in need.

A spiritual blessing was received each Sunday as the Advent candles were lit during the worship service. A candlelight celebration was planned Dec. 21, but due to the ice and snow it was postponed to Dec. 28. The congregational singing was inspiring and the special music was much appreciated.

Lowell Baer, 96, died Jan. 16. He and his late wife, Dorothy, were active members serving in leadership roles of Science Ridge church. He is survived by his wife, Lee; five daughters; two stepdaughters; a sister-in-law; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. His love and caring will be missed.

The MCC canner made its visit to Freeport Jan. 15-16. Several of our members journeyed through the subzero weather to help with the work. Our above-budget giving helped to purchase the 18,000 pounds of turkey to be canned.

Earl Sears was our guest speaker Jan. 18. Seeds, weeds, field, rocks and light were all subjects mentioned in his parable sermon.

Sanctity of Life Sunday was held. We gave baby bottles from Hope Life Center to take home to fill with our change or donations. They were returned Feb. 15.
