'God, Our Rock'
First Mennonite Church, Iowa City, Iowa
By Margalea WarnerOur theme for Lent was “God, Our Rock,” focusing upon the ways God is our refuge, redeemer, savior and friend.
Worship visuals included a huge rock and banners that began with old bulbs that over time took root, sprouted and blossomed into lilies on Easter Sunday, joined by a wondrous garden of many colored, blooming flowers. Each Wednesday in Lent we had a light supper followed by worship.
Dennis Bricker spoke March 1 on “The Land and Children of Abraham,” about his experience with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Palestine. Lindsey Row-Heyveld gave a sermon, “The Hour,” March 29.
Pastors Bob and Mag Richer Smith, who returned from sabbatical March 3, have shared about their insights and spiritual growth. For seven Sundays beginning March 29, Bob Smith taught a class on challenges facing society and the church in Guatemala.
Many adults and youth, children in strollers and well-behaved dogs walked in the CROP Walk on April 5, with funds going to MCC as well as local food bank.
Member Timothy Stalter led the University of Iowa choral ensembles, Kantorei and University Choir in passion and Easter music April 5.
On Maundy Thursday we had footwashing, a Seder for all ages and communion. Rhonda Miller led an all-ages choir in singing on Palm Sunday and Easter.
We voted April 26 as a congregation 100 percent in favor of approving the first stage of our building expansion, which will include more space for the day care for homeless children.
