CPT preserves projects, plans to move Chicago office

By Christian Peacemaker Teams staff

CHICAGO — Christian Peacemaker Teams is continuing work on several projects as a result of increased donations, while also preparing to move its Chicago office and training facilities.

CPT has reinstituted project work in Al Khalil and Hebron in the West Bank and postponed the closure of work in Iraq at least until the end of 2009.

“CPT’s first quarter income this year from individuals and congregations is ahead of what we’d expected, but we’re clearly not out of the woods yet,” said Carol Rose, CPT co-director.

“We are still unable to welcome new, stipended workers for teams in the field. But with the help of donors’ ongoing generosity, we hope to be able to end that freeze.”

CPT workers continue to implement other cost-cutting measures.

CPT also needs to move the location of its Chicago office. The troubled economy provides an opportunity for CPT to purchase a property for less than one-third of what it sold for a couple of years ago. CPT hopes to manage this purchase without taking any money from peacemaking projects in the field.

In order to make that possible, the organization is requesting donated labor. Various parts of the property need work, including a wheelchair ramp, windows, siding, cement, plumbing and paint. The yard needs to be weeded. Once the repairs are finished, the house will need a good scrubbing before moving day.

CPT is also requesting donations of materials and funds that do not lessen support for program work. It is asking for interest-free loans of $5,000 or more to further reduce or eliminate the need for a commercial loan.

  • Dear Carol, Thanks much for your excellent presentation yesterday at the Mennonite Church in Milwaukee. With regard to your request for help with renovating your new site I suggest you contact your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate which, as you know is a Christian organization. Best wishes and blessings for another successful year of peacemaking. Dale Landis
