Value of athletics
By Lee M. Yoder Harrisonburg, Va.The June 15 “Postseason Match of Sister Schools” is an outcome of an unfolding history in developing interscholastic athletics for Christopher Dock High School and for Lancaster Mennonite High School.
As the second chief administrator of CD (1966-75), I well recall how persons such as Ken Hartzler, Liz Hunsberger, Rosemary Stoltzfus and Michael Lambright laid careful and solid physical education and athletic program foundation stones that now support contests in Class AA of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. I know that LMH superintendent Richard Thomas, and others, provided the leadership for a step-by-step approach at LMH. The boys and girls of these schools have performed well, and their achievements stand in good respect in their schools and communities. Special thanks to the current administrators and boards of trustees of these schools for their solid philosophy of athletics.
Our young people are benefiting from and contributing to whole-person education — mind, body and spirit — qualities that will enable them to assume leadership responsibilities. Our schools are in good hands. Let us support them so they can flourish and excel.
