Eco-Palms and couch derby

Zion Mennonite Church, Souderton, Pa.

By Kay Derstine

On Palm Sunday, the small children walked down the aisle waving their palms.

The palms came from Guatemala and were harvested in a sustainable manner, which allows the fronds to continue growing and produce without killing the entire plant. Purchase of the Eco-Palms through world relief plays an important role in protecting forests.

The annual Easter egg hunt was held on Good Friday. Around 100 children attended up to age 10. An Easter sunrise service was held in the courtyard, with a light breakfast afterward.

On April 18 we delivered 225 grocery bags to Crossroads Community Center in Philadelphia.

A women’s spring tea was held. Each woman brought her own special tea cup. Lisa Brown, an advocate for women, was to be the speaker, but she was unable to make it, so the women fellowshiped together.

May was the beginning for Greg Yoder’s 10 weeks at Zion as a participant in Goshen College’s Ministry Inquiry Program. He is a music major graduate and the son of Jerry and Beth Yoder of Perkasie, Pa.

The Christopher Dock Mennonite High School touring choir, under the direction of Rodney Derstine, performed a sacred concert with a variety of music on May 17.

Franconia Conference and Eastern District area high school youth held a Couch Derby at Zion. Decorated couches raced through an obstacle course. Nine churches participated, with Franconia Mennonite Church’s youth coming in first.

Birth: Jakob Theodore Landis, May 5, to Josh and Jenn Landis.
