Sexuality views
By Sam Martin Broomfield, Colo.As a lifelong adult member of open and welcoming congregations, I read with dismay and disappointment the “Pink Menno views” letter in the July 20 Viewpoint.
First, the press conference wasn’t an appeal to the secular media or bowing to the court of public opinion. It was an attempt to witness to the world of the deeply held convictions by those who spoke of the way of Christ. As Anabaptists we have a history of doing that and dying for it.
It is true that nowhere in Scripture is homosexuality condoned, but neither did Jesus address whether the Earth is flat or round. We believe the Earth is round because there is a great deal of evidence to that effect. The same is true of the reasons for different sexual orientations. There is mounting scientific and behavioral evidence to support that conclusion.
As for the participation of the children and youth in Pink Menno activities, I read Luke 17:1b-2. Who is leading the children astray, those who invited them to participate in the Pink Menno activities or those in the church who demonstrate to them a practice of exclusion? How many more people do we want to lose?
