Hymns and movies

First Mennonite Church, Denver

By Harlan D. Unrau

The June 7 service included an “Education Celebration” led by Barb Yoder Stutzman, FMC interim coordinator for child and youth faith formation. Venture Club participated in an afternoon bike-a-thon fundraiser for Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp.

The June 28 service featured a medley of “Songs of My Father” performed by congregational musicians directed by Arlen Hershberger. On July 19, Hershberger led a hymn sing at Greeley Mennonite Church.

Three Thursdays during June featured “Happy Hour Movie” discussions led by pastors Vern Rempel and Annie Lengacher Browning. The featured movies included Stranger Than Fiction, Doubt and Slumdog Millionaire.

On July 5, Peace Sunday, Jordan Delp, our Ministry Inquiry Program student from East Greenville, Pa., who will be a senior at Goshen (Ind.) College, gave the message. Pastor Vern Rempel presented his annual “Hymn and Movie” series during the remaining Sundays of July.

Eighteen people from our congregation attended Columbus 2009. FMC’s delegates included Vern Rempel, Annie Lengacher Browning, Anna Schlabach-Yoder, Harlan Unrau and Luke Yoder (alternate). Delegates and attendees conducted a panel discussion on the assembly during the adult Christian education hour on July 19, and several delegates reported on their experiences July 26 at the worship service.

Martin and Andrea Wiens represented us at Mennonite World Conference in Paraguay July 14-19.

We gave sending prayers June 28 for Marie Hafeman, who moved to work with World Hunger Relief in Elm Mott, Texas, and July 19 for Devan Yoder and Liz Immel, who moved to Wisconsin for school.

Wedding: Marcos Stoltzfus and Jess Roth, June 20.
