Called as a people
Starkly different from Joshua, Gideon lives in one of the bleaker moments of Israel’s covenantal relationship with God. God’s people are worshiping pagan gods, so God has allowed them to suffer the consequences, this time at the hands of the Midianites.
But God is faithful. When they call out to him for deliverance (though, notes K. Lawson Younger Jr. in the NIV Application Commentary, not in repentance) God responds, choosing Gideon to work through as he continues to work out his plan of redemption.
