Bead for life
By Jean WillemsBirths: Annabelle Elise, Nov. 11, to Steve and Steph Miller; Payton Elizabeth, Oct. 20, to Bill and Misty Jones.
On Oct. 18, we celebrated the return of Pastor Howard and Cathy Wagler, who were on sabbatical the previous three months, and welcomed Jesse, Shiloh, Carsen, Kennedy and Havily Blasdel as our new student pastor. Jesse joined our pastoral team that week.
A new ministry was established for young families to meet and get to know one another. The families receive an evening of eating and playing games together. The Band of Angels Group serves the meal.
On Nov. 7 the 47th annual Yoder turkey dinner was held at the Journey @ Yoder Campus. Items baked for this event: 325 pies, 75 turkeys, 680 pounds of corn, and 130 loaves of bread were toasted for the dressing. We served 2,000 people. The money made from this meal was given to mission projects.
We held a “Bead for Life” party Nov. 13 at the SHMC activity center. Ugandan women, living on less than $2 a day, turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads. North Americans partner with these women by buying the jewelry.
Advent Conspiracy began on Nov. 29. The goal was to “reclaim Christmas by reducing our own consumerism and generously meeting the needs of others.” We raised awareness of our eating habits compared to the rest of the world. SHMCers were encouraged to eat a subsistence diet of rice and beans two meals per week in December, donating the savings in meal costs to MEDA.
