Sleep out for homeless

Zion Mennonite Church, Souderton, Pa.

By Kay Derstine

Zion’s eighth annual Fall Festival was held on Oct. 10. Music was provided by the bluegrass group Blades of Grass from Maryland. The proceeds were divided between Keystone Opportunity Center and Morning Star Ministries, which provides a home for pregnant women in Souderton.

The church was invited to step back in time on Oct. 18 and revisit the original Zion Mennonite Church located on Broad Street in Souderton. The history book committee prepared a light lunch, Zion trivia and a tour of the old church.

The Creation Care Team on Nov. 8 challenged all members to find alternative means of transportation to worship for one day.

On Nov. 14, 15 of Zion’s youth participated in Keystone Opportunity Center’s “Sleep Out for Homelessness” to experience having no place to spend the night. They spent the first part of the evening at the busiest corner of Souderton, holding a rally for homelessness awareness. Returning to Zion, they listened to stories from three people who had experienced homelessness and were grateful to KOC for its help. The youth beds were made of cardboard boxes, in which they slept for about six hours.

Kelsy Jurewicz, a Zion youth, picked for her senior project to host a spaghetti dinner on Nov. 14. All of the $2,109 of proceeds went to World Vision’s Clean Water Fund to build a 60-foot well in a Third World country’s village.

The Front Street house that Zion bought is undergoing repairs and renovations as we prepare it for use by Keystone Opportunity Center.

Wedding: Jennifer M. Moyer and Randall Harris, Oct. 17.

Deaths: Arlene Young, Oct. 5; Judy Murphy, 62, wife of Barry Murphy, Nov. 4. — Kay Derstine
