A calf in church
Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola, Pa.
By Margaret NoltGroffdale Mennonite Church hosted the eight Groffdale District churches for special events on Oct. 17-18. A Saturday mud bowl attracted many youth in spite of rain and chilling temperatures. The fire company lent a hand in making the field ready for a muddy touch football game! Young adults from the Harrisburg Discipleship Center joined the group, guiding the evening. Ryan and Friends, with ventriloquist and comedian Ryan Bomgardner, performed for a family event Sunday evening.
On Nov. 8, Phares Shreiner, a longtime member of Groffdale, was interviewed during the children’s time about the trip he made on a cattle boat in the late 1940s. He told about his time as a sea-going cowboy on a ship delivering horses to Italy after World War II. The children were informed about how the cattle boats were the beginning of Heifer International, started by the Church of the Brethren and now independent. Glen Hershey entered with a calf during the children’s time, causing quite a bit of excitement! The next week in their Sunday school classes, the children voted to purchase a heifer, a trio of rabbits and a flock of chicks through Heifer International for their Christmas project this year.
Sam Landis Martin, 69, died Nov. 14 after a courageous battle with cancer. Survivors: wife, Miriam; four sons, Randall, Darryl, Dale and Keith; a daughter, Janet Martin; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
