MB nurse among dead in Haiti

Breaking news: updated version

By Celeste Kennel-Shank Mennonite Weekly Review

It was to be her fourth time serving in Haiti as a nurse.

Yvonne Martin, 67, who belonged to Waterloo (Ont.) Mennonite Brethren Church, had arrived in Haiti with a medical mission team an hour and a half before the earthquake, according to The Record, a Kitchener, Ont.-based newspaper.

She died when the guesthouse where she was staying in Port-au-Prince collapsed Jan. 12.

Waterloo MB Church asked for prayer for Martin’s family, especially her husband, Ron.

“In unity with them, we are consoled to know that she died doing exactly what she loved to do,” the church wrote on its Web site. “Yvonne’s prayer for Haiti was Psalm 72. As a church, we will make this our prayer too.”

Martin was headed to northern Haiti among a group of seven nurses to provide medical care and support through the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada. The denomination, based in Kitchener, runs medical clinics, sanitation projects and training centers in Haiti.

Martin’s Jan. 20 memorial service filled Waterloo MB Church’s hundreds of seats, and flowed into a second room, The Record reported. Her son Luke and his daughter Olivia sang “Pass Me Not,” as Martin’s hymnbook at home had been open to that song.

“It was a tribute that honored the Lord whom she loved and served,” wrote Phil Delsaut, Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada president, in a Jan. 22 statement.

“We are thankful for the strong sense of caring evident in Yvonne’s home congregation for the family. Yvonne embraced life fully, loved her family and friends and had a passionate desire to give of herself to help the unfortunate and needy of the world. She especially cared for the people of Haiti.”
