Message of peace
Hyattsville (Md.) Mennonite Church
By Peter GoeringMusic was a significant part of our All Saints/All Souls Day service on Nov. 1. “Waiting: An Elegy for choir and cello,” a lament for the dead, was performed.
This piece was composed by member Janet Peachey, using a text by poet Cheryl Denise.
We hosted our annual International Craft Fair and Bake Sale featuring Ten Thousand Villages merchandise on Oct. 30-31 for the surrounding community. Sales exceeded $9,000.
On Nov. 15 we welcomed Ricardo Esquivia Ballestas, a Colombian Mennonite who is national coordinator for the Commission for Restoration, Life and Peace of the Colombian Council of Evangelical Churches and founding director of SembrandoPaz (PlantingPeace). He preached to us through member Jim Glick, who translated the Spanish, yet his message of hope, justice, transformation, peacebuilding and reconciliation was as clear as a bell.
The junior and senior high youth, their leaders and several parents walked along the National Mall on Nov. 21 in the Help the Homeless Walkathon. The funds raised by our walkers supported Hope and a Home, a local organization whose mission is to empower low income families with children in Washington, D.C., to create stable homes for themselves and to make lasting changes in their lives.
The children’s annual Christmas pageant, “The Little Drummer Boy,” was canceled due to the Dec. 18-19 blizzard and was rescheduled for Epiphany Sunday on Jan. 3.
On Christmas Eve, the sanctuary was filled for a service of “Nine Lessons and Carols.” The offering supported the work of our brother Jean de Dieu Teshilu, who is promoting economic stability and community building in Congo.
Birth: Marguerite Amelia, Dec. 6, to Kathleen Zook and Scott Yoder.
