Book examines faith trends from believers church view
Canadian Mennonite University staffWINNIPEG, Man. — Canadian Mennonite University Press has published a collection of essays on the relationship between the church and the world while engaging with trends in contemporary Christianity.
The book, New Perspectives in Believers Church Ecclesiology, grew out of a believers church conference, “Congregationalism, Denominationalism and the Body of Christ,” hosted by CMU in 2008.
“The term ‘believers church’ has come into use in the past century and a half to designate that church tradition as such, and those denominations and congregations in particular, that baptize Christian believers on the basis of their personal confession of faith and insist on voluntary church membership,” said the book’s editor, Helmut Harder, professor emeritus of theology at CMU.
This family of churches is made up of a wide range of denominations, including Pentecostals, Mennonites, Brethren and Baptists. A growing number of Anabaptist communities from the Southern Hemisphere also identify with the believers church family.
The book combines essays of biblical scholarship, historical theology and ethics for an update on trends in believers church theology and church life. It is available online.
