All schools should review national anthem practice
By Ethel Harder Reedley, Calif. The rationale for Goshen College to play the national anthem seems weak.
I am disappointed that the powers that be in many of our Mennonite schools seem to acquiesce to criticism from some outside our Mennonite circles.
Webster defines patriotism as love for country. I believe I am patriotic, as I desire the best for my country. That desire is focused on care for others, assisting those less fortunate, reaching out in good will and placing Christ’s teachings above all else. Surely the military and war can have no place in my efforts at improving conditions in my nation.
I request that the boards of Goshen College, Bethel College, Fresno Pacific University, Bluffton University and Tabor College review this practice. There are alternatives: In her Feb. 8 editorial, Celeste Kennel-Shank suggests “This Is My Song, O God of All Nations” by Lloyd Stone; others include “America the Beautiful,” even “This Land Is Your Land.” Surely the people in charge of our Mennonite schools can find a way and not give in to compromise and pressure.

Before you go any further, listen to a video of OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM, by Francis Scott Keys. Just email me at aulfranz@cox.net and I'll send it to you. You will never sing it the same again. Blessings!
