Taking a stand

By Juanita and Wilbert Shenk Elkhart, Ind.

As Goshen College alumni, we are disappointed with the decision to play the national anthem at sporting events.

We agree with Celeste Kennel-Shank’s editorial and suggestion to substitute “This Is My Song, O God of All Nations.” Goshen has been identified with the Mennonite church until now, and anyone who chooses to attend the college or its sporting events should be prepared to accept that fact.

Are we willing to take our stand on this issue as much as we were in relation to the draft and serving in the military? Is there any point today at which we are willing to take a stand against the cultural expectations?
