Peace and hospitality

Hyattsville (Md.) Mennonite Church

By Peter Goering

Our adult education class Jan. 10 focused on the wide-ranging implications of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize speech.

Discussion included just-war theory, the root causes of war, how we hold governments accountable and whether a secular government can embrace the radical witness of nonviolence.

We welcomed Al and Peggy Hiebert from British Columbia, who joined the International Guest House staff in January for a three-month term as SOOP volunteers.

On Jan. 17 we honored the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. Excerpts were read from King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

“Hospitality Night” celebrated on Jan. 24 provided an opportunity for many of us to gather in fellowship with friends from our congregation and from University Park Church of the Brethren. The goal of this twice-a-year informal social event was simply to help us get to know each other better. Hosts and guests were matched in a random fashion.

Associate pastor Adam Tice attended AMBS Pastors Week Jan. 25-28. He took part in a gathering for new pastors. A common refrain was of the work involved in learning the culture and unconscious dynamics of a new congregation.

The Goshen College Men’s Chorus filled our sanctuary with joyful and inspiring music on Feb. 21, the first Sunday of Lent. We hosted the 50 young men, director and college representatives for two nights so that they could perform at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

Pastor Cindy Lapp completed the Values-Based Leadership Program at Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in February. She appreciated the opportunity to interact and learn with leaders from diverse vocations.
