Ready for rejection
By Eugene K. Souder Grottoes, Va.Instead of playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Goshen College, a good option was given by the assistant editor of MWR to sing instead “This Is My Song, O God of All the Nations.”
We could sing honestly of “other hearts in other lands are beating, with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.” This would replace glorifying “rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air,” a song that hardly speaks our language.
While this may not always bring a positive response, we must remember we follow a Leader whose actions were often rejected. Jesus had no illusions of being popular or that his followers would be.
This decision effects the witness of us all. As an alumnus and a concerned Christian, I pray we will take the high road. Such leadership would provide a model for all our colleges.
