New book presents Bible and its tenets in Spanish

By DeVonna R. Allison Mennonite Mission Network

BURGOS, Spain — Dennis Byler believes that for the Bible to accomplish the work God intended, it must be understood.

In his newest book, Todo lo Que te Preguntabas Sobre la Biblia (Y Algunas Cosas Que Preferirías No Saber), translated as Everything You’ve Wanted to Know About the Bible (And a Few Things You Probably Didn’t), Byler presents the basic tenets of the Bible in Spanish.

Byler and his wife, Connie, are Mennonite Mission Network workers serving in their 30th year as part of Burgos Mennonite Church. In addition to teaching at a Protestant seminary near Madrid, Dennis Byler has written several Spanish-language books and edits the monthly Anabaptist periodical, El Mensajero (The Messenger).

For years Byler has written a series of articles on books of the Bible for inclusion in El Mensajero. The response to these articles led Byler to see a need for a comprehensive guide to the Bible’s history and message from an Anabaptist perspective in the Spanish language.

“Most of the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition books are presented in the English, Dutch or German languages,” Byler said.

A lifelong student of the Bible, Byler began a habit of daily Bible reading as a teenager. He has lost count of the number of times he has read the entire Bible through in its original languages.

Byler presented his material in a frequently-asked-questions format, coupling a detailed index of questions with concise answers.

Byler is offering the book as a free download in PDF format so that more believers in countries across the world can have access to it.

Within weeks of posting the book online, “there have been several hundred downloads from all over the Spanish-speaking world,” Byler said.

Byler would like to see the book used for congregational study.
