Prayer team paves way for EMM presence in Czech Republic

By Kristina Charles Eastern Mennonite Mission

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — A well in Bethlehem Chapel here reminded a prayer team of the deep stores of Christian belief in this largely irreligious nation.

The chapel was built in 1391 and shortly thereafter entertained the preaching of John Hus, the Czech reformer and martyr.

“Jesus has been here, Jesus is here, and Jesus will be here,” said Maria Bowman, a member of a prayer team sent by Eastern Mennonite Missions.

The team of eight went to the Czech Republic June 11 to explore the country and meet with Czech Brethren church leaders to consider a long-term EMM presence.

Early on, the team sought input and partnership from Czech Brethren leaders. This denomination is the largest and oldest evangelical Christian community within the Czech Republic.

Though in need of more pastors and workers, the Brethren leaders have bold plans for their nation and a strong desire to see their neighbors come to know the Lord, Bowman said.

Despite past abuses against the Czech Brethren by outsiders, the EMM team felt they were able to build a strong relationship with the church leaders.

“Initially they may have viewed us as intruders but now see us as partners,” said Jim Dombach, EMM’s area representative to Europe and a member of the team. “I firmly believe we will be further ahead [in our outreach] if we work with the national church.”

Dombach sees many opportunities for service in the Czech Republic, including serving as English teachers and reaching out to street children, prostitutes, the Roma population and other marginalized groups.

Two short-term EMM workers recently returned from the Czech Republic, and two more will go at the beginning of next year. After their visit, the prayer team members expect to see more collaboration between EMM and the Czech church.
