Replacing her is Byron Rempel-Burkholder of Winnipeg, Man.

While serving on the MWC staff as a volunteer, what Burkhardt liked best was the people from around the world, she said.

“Meeting them has been an amazing experience, beyond anything I could ever have imagined,” she said.

Larry Miller, MWC’s general secretary, said Burkhardt worked with diligence and skill.

“At a time when the scope and activities of MWC were continually expanding, she was able to keep abreast of developments,” he said.

Rempel-Burkholder comes with international, communication and church experience.

Born in 1957 in Ethiopia, he moved to Canada with his family at age 13. He earned degrees in English and New Testament and pastored two congregations. He also spent time in Congo with the Mennonite Brethren Board of Missions and Services.

Rempel-Burkholder edited curriculum and worship resources for Mennonite groups in North America. He was the founding editor of Leader magazine for Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA. Recently he was named book editor of Herald Press, owned by both of the above groups. He also continues as editor of Rejoice!, an inter-Mennonite devotional magazine. All assignments, as well as his work with MWC, are part time.

“I always imagined that someday I would work for MWC,” Rempel-Burkholder said. “This work is a convergence of many things in my life: third-culture kid, journalism, publishing, church and my cross-cultural interest.”

As part of his work for MWC, Rempel-Burkholder will also take over responsibilities for MWC’s quarterly publication, Courier-Correo-Courrier, when the current editor, J. Lorne Peachey, retires Sept. 30.
