MC USA financial signs improve

By Mennonite Church USA staff

Mennonite Church USA has received an audit report showing its agencies and entities have improved their overall financial standing, while continuing to have losses in some areas.

The report, available as a PDF — from the fiscal year ending Jan. 31 or, in some cases, Dec. 31 — shows gains for some agencies in 2010 in contrast with losses for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2009.

Most of the agencies and entities reduced their expenses in the past year, including staff cuts. However, with severance pay, these changes may show up more in the next fiscal year’s numbers.

Mennonite Mission Network’s net assets gained about $750,000 this past year, after losing more than $2.3 million the year before.

Church Extension Services, Inc., The Mennonite Inc., Mennonite Health Services Alliance and Mennonite Women USA also had gains after losses.

MC USA Executive Leadership, Mennonite Publishing Network and Mennonite Mutual Aid had a net loss in this past year. Yet, each lost less than it had before.

For example, MMA’s net loss was $82,000 this past year compared with $3.3 million before.

Mennonite Men’s net assets were positive in both years, with a slight increase this past year.

Mennonite Education Agency’s fiscal year ends June 30, so its numbers are not yet available.

“I am especially thankful for the members of Mennonite Church USA who showed their faithfulness and their faith in the church through continuing to give in spite of the poor economy,” said Glen Guyton, MC USA director for constituent resources.

Additionally, Executive Leadership, MMN and MHS Alliance gained investment income after showing losses the previous year.

MMN’s investment income went from a loss of more than $1.3 million to a gain of nearly $925,000 the next year.

“We celebrate the generous spirit of all who have heeded the call of mission,” said Paula Killough, MMN senior executive for advancement.
