Freedom School

By Pat BertscheAn all-church garage sale was held May 21-22, with proceeds for a group planning a service-learning trip to Guatemala.
The Rosedale Farmers’ Market opened on May 16. The market includes 10 local vendors and community gardeners. Produce from the Rainbow community garden is taken to the market each Sunday.
A reception honoring our high school graduates was held June 6 for Frederick Amstutz, Brooke Banning, Doug Bartel, Zack Becker, Christian Buller and Nicole Jara. College graduates from Rainbow church were Matthew Briles, Fonda Briles, Jason Gerig, Whitney Janzen-Pankratz, Jennifer Kaufman, Emily Kliewer and Tye Zehner.
Freedom School Sunday was June 20 to raise funds to help with the financing of Freedom School, which began on June 21. Rainbow Mennonite Freedom School is a six-week summer educational enrichment program for children in grades K-8. Our program is one of several throughout the Kansas City metro area, with more than 100 Freedom School sites nationwide. We serve about 100 children, many from the church’s neighborhood.
Women of Rainbow Church were invited to hear Krista Kaufman, who shared her recent experiences of volunteering in Haiti with Heart to Heart International on June 22.
