Summer fun
Chicago Community Mennonite Church
By Mallory K. DigninThe start of summer has moved many of our activities outdoors so that we can enjoy the warmer weather.
Our annual picnic, June 6 in East Garfield Park, was an opportunity to celebrate our Sunday school teachers and tutoring program volunteers.
A group trekked to the Michigan side of Lake Michigan June 18-19 for another summer tradition, the weekend canoeing trip. They enjoyed swimming, boating, relaxing and conversing.
Another group ended weeks of training with the Mini Menno-thon, a half marathon run, 13.1 miles, organized by the Mennonite Voluntary Service unit, on June 26. There were 12 participants and a great support crew delivering water along the route.
The New Horizon garden, next door to our church, is in full bloom. Gardeners from our church join with members of First Church of the Brethren and neighborhood families to tend to the garden. The space is also used for discussions led by Pastor Megan Ramer about her sabbatical reading that the congregation was invited to join.
We held a coming-of-age ceremony May 16 for Ian Clark. The celebration included a hot dog bar, numerous pies and many stories about Clark. We officially welcomed Martin and Liz Dyrst and their children back to Chicago June 6. They had been serving with Mennonite Central Committee in Mexico.
Wedding: Andrea Baker and Danny Dean, July 3.
