Spruce Lake’s butterfly garden, established last year, has been certified as a Monarch Waystation, announced Lisa Ferrer, director of the camp’s Outdoor School.

Hundreds of millions of butterflies travel up to 3,000 miles each fall from the United States and Canada to their wintering grounds in Mexico and the California coast. Monarch migration is severely threatened by habitat loss, a trend perpetuated by rampant development and the widespread use of herbicides.

Spruce Lake’s Waystation will be listed on the registry of Waystations at www.monarchwatch.org. The site offers instructions for establishing a butterfly habitat.
