Family homecoming at Hans Herr House
The 1719 Hans Herr House in Willow Street, Pa., hosted a “Herr Family Homecoming” July 17.
— Lowell Brown/LMHS
Participants honored Lancaster County’s Native Americans and its first European settlers by watching craft demonstrations, playing traditional games, telling family stories, posing for photos in colonial-era clothing and eating pulled pork and whoopie pies at long tables under the trees of the old orchard.
The event was part of Lancaster Roots 300, a yearlong celebration of Lancaster County history, co-sponsored by the 1719 Hans Herr House and Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.
Coming events in the Lancaster Roots 300 celebrations include:
■ Sept. 18, Snitz Fest and Heritage Day at Hans Herr House.
■ Oct. 9, public acknowledgment and commemoration of Native American legacy in Lancaster County, including dedication of Native American longhouse site at Hans Herr House.
■ Nov. 19-Dec. 31, annual show and sale of Pennsylvania German folk art at Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.
■ Dec. 3-4, candlelight tours at Hans Herr House.
