MWR wins top award from press association

DALLAS — Mennonite Weekly Review received the top award in its category at the Associated Church Press annual convention April 22.

MWR won the first-place award in the Best in Class competition for national or international newspapers.

The Review works in every way to create a sense of community and to achieve its mission,” ACP judge Pamela Hill Nettleton wrote. “A consistent, crisp, clear design packs much news onto each page, yet invites readers and removes design obstacles for them. Lively headlines stop and intrigue readers and help create a feeling of a community conversation, and it is a conversation that does not sidestep tough issues.”

The other top awards for newspapers went to Anglican Journal, second; and The Christian Chronicle and United Church News, which tied for third.

MWR has received one of the top three awards in its category for six consecutive years, including three first-place awards, two seconds and one third.

MWR received two other awards: a second-place Award of Merit for front-page design, and a third-place Honorable Mention in column writing for Ardie S. Goering’s “Due Consideration” column.

ACP, with about 150 members, is the oldest religious press association in North America.
