16 lives on journeys of faith
On my desk is Continuing the Journey: The Geography of Our Faith — Mennonite Stories Integrating Faith and Life and the World of Thought, edited by Nancy V. Lee, published by Cascadia, 2009, 404 pages, $23.95.
This book is the second volume of memoirs by members of Eastern Mennonite University’s Anabaptist Center for Religion and Society. ACRS offers “space for discourse of the elders,” according to Ray Gingerich, editor of the memoirs series. The group’s purpose is the “promotion of an Anabaptist understanding of church, community and higher education” and the “recovery of Anabaptism as essential to the survival of our church institutions.”

Change for better
As Janet Plenert says in “Ashamed, But Hopeful in Christ,” there are more than enough shameful things missions to indigenous peoples have done in the past — and may be doing still today — that need to be repented of. But my reading and observation indicate that what the Mennonites of the Paraguayan Chaco have done is commendable. They are permitting the indigenous peoples to acculturate at their own speed, offering help as it is wanted or needed.

Engaging God’s ‘plan B’
In Politics Under God (Herald Press, 2007, 224 pages, $11.99) John H. Redekop encourages Christians toward discriminating involvement in politics. “Historically … Mennonites have stressed conscientious objection,” he writes. “The time has come to stress conscientious participation.” However, he notes, “Christians should get involved only to the extent that Christian discipleship allows.”
