Overcoming evil with good
Last summer a colleague and I visited with a small immigrant Mennonite congregation near Atlanta as Georgia prepared to implement some of the strictest immigration laws in the country.
We listened to the congregation’s leaders, their fears and their struggles. I recounted rap lyrics from Jay-Z in my head while responding to questions about the legal obligations of a traffic stop.

Our smaller, fragile world
On Sept. 11, 2001, I was in the midst of a pastoral team meeting at the Eat-N-Park in suburban Johnstown, Pa. A waitress came over to our table to announce that they’d be dismantling the breakfast buffet, that a state of war existed and that we needed to evacuate the area around the Johnstown airport but that we didn’t need to hurry to finish our meal.
