Calif. Bible study offers healing after abortions
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Statistics show at least one in four women in the United States will have an abortion, which all too often devastates a woman’s life as well as ends a child’s.
The woman may never have told anyone about her abortion. She may live with shame and with symptoms of post-abortion syndrome such as anxiety, numbness, depression, eating disorders and substance abuse.

Pro-choice belief
I am pro-choice. In that Mennonite Church USA does not have an “official” policy on abortion law, and we’ve tended to tiptoe around the morality issue, I suspect there are folks who believe, as do I, that abortion is a decision that should be made by a woman, her doctor and her God.

Pro-life violence a contradiction
During the “Summer of Mercy” anti-abortion protests in Wichita, Kan., in 1991, a Mennonite Brethren pastor in the city said he heard a wake-up call for his congregation. “We haven’t done what we can to prevent the murder of life,” Gordon Bergman told MWR. “I have urged the people to look to the Lord to see what we need to be doing.”

Abortion concern
An open letter to President Obama: I am thankful God has placed you in this leadership role. Today I am writing about my concern for legalized abortion. As a follower of Christ’s living and teaching, I realize that all creation is sacred. I am a supporter of all mature, knowledgeable, intelligent persons having the privilege and right of free choice. In the case of unwanted pregnancies, that choice needs to come into play prior to conception. The participants must make the sane, responsible and conscious decision to take necessary precautions to avoid conception. That is the time of free choice.

Two abortion issues
The Feb. 9 editorial, “Abortion and Openness,” calls for open discussion of abortion. Part of that discussion might include dividing the matter into two issues: 1) When and if the killing of other humans is justified; and 2) When human life begins. The second is much more difficult for most of us.

Abortion and openness
The combination of a Democratic Congress and a pro-choice Obama administration is raising concern that abortion will become more normalized and that some existing restrictions will be lifted. For peace-church members, this time of change is an opportunity to recommit to efforts to reduce abortion.

Hard choices at end of life
A loved one is rushed to the hospital with a life-threatening condition. The doctors say they could try to save the person you love. But even if they are successful, the results could be devastating — brain damage or other terrible effects. You have only a few minutes to decide what to do.
